Curfew

What are Curfew Laws?

Curfew laws restrict the movement of youth, preventing minors from being in public or private establishments during certain hours of the day. Typically curfews begin between 11 pm and Midnight and are lifted in the morning between 5 and 6 am.

Curfew laws are in place to prevent juvenile crime as well as to keep youth safe from becoming victims of crime.

These laws apply to

  • Any public space, such as streets, parks, highways, and schools.
  • Public establishments, such as movie theaters, restaurants, and bowling alleys

How Can I stay Safe

Many American cities have some sort of curfew law. It is important to be aware of your own local rules.

In Cincinnati, curfew lasts between 10 pm and 5 am for children under 16 years of age and between 12 am and 5 am for those between 16 and 18 years of age. To learn more please visit the Cincinnati Code of Ordinances.

Fortunately, most curfew laws have a broad set of exceptions to accommodate the different lifestyles and needs of youth.   If you are accompanied by a parent, guardian, or another responsible adult, then these laws do not apply to you. Additionally,  many cities have exceptions for travel to and from work, school, or religious events.

Consequences

Curfew violations are punished differently based on the jurisdiction. In general, a curfew violation can lead to:

  • Restriction of driver's license privileges
  • Fines (usually increasing for subsequent violations)
  • Possible detention in jail or juvenile hall (after multiple violations)

In the city of Cincinnati, a parent can also be charged with a minor misdemeanor if they "permit or by inefficient control allow" their child to violate curfew.
